This is a superbly proportioned Nazi Wehrmacht Schirmmütze or visor cap in a larger size with no mothing or other damage. It was just purchased from the estate of the American veteran who brought it back to the United States after World War II. It has never been in the hands of a militaria collector nor has it been passed from dealer to dealer. It is 100% original to the Third Reich period.
The US size 7-1/4 (about European size 58 or 59) cap is very well made of grey-green worsted wool with a dark green band and white wool piping. The rimmed green and glossy black visor is positioned short (nearly vertical) and the wreath and eagle clutching a swastika are beautifully done in highlighted aluminum. The original laminated leather 2-buckle strap across the front of the cap is somewhat twisted from having the cap hanging on it, but is complete and in perfectly usable condition.
The original lining is ribbed blue-grey satin with a plastic sweat protector sewed in the center. A small piece of the plastic is missing. Printed directly on the lining beneath the plastic are the words Luscha - Stirndruckfrei D.R.G.M. (Luscha [name of the manufacturer], Stirndruckfrei [does not put pressure on the forehead - the manufacturer’s slogan], D.R.G.M. [Deutsches Reich Gebrauchmuster - roughly German Registered Design]).
The sweatband inside the cap is original to it but appears to have been re-sewed to the inside edge of the cap by hand as can be seen in our photo of the bottom of the cap. The cap is clean with no obvious sweat or staining on either the sweatband or the body of the cap.
Best of all is the rather elegant but rakish style of this genuine Nazi Schirmmütze. The front is quite high and rolled back and the visor is quite vertical, giving the piece the desirable classic but slightly “crushed” look. It is very similar to the cap shown worn by Paul Engelhardt of the 276th Volksgrenadier Division during the Von Rundstedt Offensive in Luxembourg (Battle of the Bulge) in December 1944.
