This superb 8-1/2 inch plate by renowned German porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal of Selb, Germany depicts an alpine scene of snow covered spruce trees in unbelievable shallow relief. Around the edge in metallic gold on white are the letters OLYMPIADE 1936 and five entwined golden rings.
This fine porcelain plate is a perfect mate in every way to the better known Third Reich Rosenthal commemorative plate depicting the Berghof or Haus Wachenfeld, home of Germany’s 23rd Chancellor and Nazi Party Führer Adolf Hitler, on the Obersalzberg high above Berchtesgaden, Germany.
The plates are of the same size, same material and made in very much the same way.
The images on the front side of both Berghof and the Olympic plate is magnificent. It is both impressed in the porcelain and finely painted by hand to give an unbelievably realistic picture of the alpine scene. This plate still bears about three quarters of the original Rosenthal gold paper/foil label stuck to the back side below the Rosenthal Selb logo under the glaze.
This very rare, authentic Nazi period commemorative Rosenthal porcelain plate is in perfect condition; no chips, no cracks, no discoloration.
