This incredible pair of authentic Third Reich police documents dated 28 May 1940 and 4 June 1940, was generated by the Director of Prisons in the Wien (Vienna) police department. He forwarded his request to the Reichsstatthalter (Baldur von Schirach) in Wien, the highest civil authority in the area, and included copious supporting documentation.

The matter was an outgrowth of the “protective custody” arrest and imprisonment of a Jew, Helene Sara Friedmann who was transported to Ravensbrück Concentration Camp (Konzentrationslager Ravensbrück or KLR) northwest of Berlin in April of 1940. During the transportation of Helene Sara Friedmann to Ravensbrück Concentration Camp, her guards incurred a debt of RM1.66 (about 65 US cents!) on her behalf in the city of Märische Schönberg, probably for feeding her. The Mayor of Märische Schönberg had demanded reimbursement.

These documents are the agreement to reimburse the Mayor of Märische Schönberg for his outlay of 65 cents from the German Government bank account. Point 4 of the agreement requests the return of the transportation documents of Helene Sara Friedmann from the Mayor of Märische Schönberg to the Reichsstatthalter in Wien so that the file could be closed.

These very rare documents provide an incredible glimpse into the Nazi bureaucracy and their need to account for a few pennies spent sending a Jewish woman to a notorious Nazi concentration camp.
