Rosenthal Porcelain was perhaps the premier producer of high-quality porcelain table articles during the Third Reich of Adolf Hitler. The company produced a wide range, from dinner plates and serving pieces to cups and saucers, and they even made electrical insulators for power lines.
The piece we offer here is a white and blue .4 liter tea pot with a white and blue lid that was once part of the table service in an Officers Mess Hall, a Nazi Party Kasino, or some other official facility. For all we know, it may have been used in the Reichskanzlei or even in Hitlers Berghof on the Obersalzberg above Berchtesgaden.
The bottom is well-marked: the Rosenthal crown logo and the
Deutsche Arbeitsfront (DAF or German Labor Front) logo encircled by the words
MODELL DES AMTES SCHÖNHEIT DER ARBEIT (Approved
Model of the Office of Beauty of Labor) are applied in green under the glaze. There is also a number 0,40 under the glaze.
The Office of Schönheit der Arbeit of the DAF decided what constituted kitsch (trash) in Germany and what constituted good industrial design. This simple but elegant style of plain white porcelain was considered to be the classic form by the DAF, and firms that produced it were allowed to use the MODELL DES AMTES SCHÖNHEIT DER ARBEIT cogged wheel and swastika logo as a seal of approval.
This genuine Third Reich Rosenthal tea pot has just one tiny chip which we have marked with a red arrow on the photo at the top of this web page. It may have been there from the day it was made and it can only be seen at close inspection. We have tried to photograph it so any potential buyer can see it. No crazing, no cracks, no discoloration. A rare piece of classic Nazi porcelain in very good condition, with original lid.
The tea pot is about 5 inches tall, 6 inches in diameter and weighs about 1-1/4 pound.

The inside of the lid is marked with the letters D.R.P. for Deutsches Reichspatent, the equivalent of German Patent.
