Braunau am Inn
A COMPLETE SET
OF 10 CANCELED
NAZI POSTCARDS
FROM THE
REUNIFICATION
OF GERMANY
WITH AUSTRIA
IN 1938
Adolf Hitler Speech
This lot consists of all ten specially printed Third Reich postcards, all unused and each mailed from a different province or city in the former country of Austria on 10 April 1938, the day Austrians voted in a national Volksabstimmung (Plebiscite) to unite their country into the Großdeutschland of Adolf Hitler.
Cardinal Innitzer
Led by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Wien (Vienna), Theodor Cardinal Innitzer (left), Austrians turned out in record numbers on 10 April 1938 to approve the ,,Anschluß’’ by a 99.75% margin, in affirmation of the Nazi slogan “One Nation, One State, One Leader”.
Each 4 x 5-7/8 inch cream colored card in this set has a blue-bordered picture on the left of a famous place in the former country of Austria.

Those places include Vorarlberg, Tirol, Kärnten (Carinthia), Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), Burgenland, Salzburg, Steiermark (Styria), Oberösterreich (Upper Austria), Wien (Vienna), and Adolf Hitler’s birthplace in Braunau on the Inn River.

Geburtshaus des Führers
All ten cards bear a special green 10 April 1938 Volksabstimmung 6 Reichspfennigs postage stamp and are addressed to one Norbert Frischer in Wien.

The cards for Vorarlberg, Salzburg, Steiermark, Oberösterreich and Braunau were each mailed and postmarked in Bregenz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Graz, Linz and Braunau respectively. The others were mailed in Wien and all bear a cancelation that proclaims the Anschluß.

Individual cards from this historic Third Reich postcard set are rare and complete sets are almost never encountered. The Braunau card in this set appears on page 65 of the book “Hitlers Heimatland” by Ray & Josephine Cowdery, and this set is from the collection of the authors. Very good condition.
