This is a rare and beautiful example of the standard 6-7/8 inch (175 mm) heavy alpaca Eiskaffeebecher or Eisschokoladebecher (ice coffee goblet or cold chocolate milk goblet) manufactured during the Third Reich in Aue, Germany by the firm of August Wellner & Sohne. The base is 2-3/4 inches (70 mm) in diameter and is clearly marked on the top with the name WELLNER above a circle containing the number 6.
On the bottom the piece is stamped with the letters H.D.D.K., the initials of the HAUS DER DEUTSCHEN KUNST (House of German Art) in Munich, and there is no doubt whatsoever that it was in use in the restaurant or or the terrace of Hitler’s spectacular art museum in München, Capital of the Nazi Movement.
The Becher is listed as item 5833 on page 17 of the 1936 Sächsische Metallwarenfabrik August Wellner Söhne AG catalog (shown left). Without the personalization for the House of German Art, this heavy alpaca cup sold for 10 Reichsmark or 4 US dollars at the time the House of German Art opened.
It is elegant in form and in very good used condition, showing only the minor nicks in the surface that come from ordinary use, washing, storage, etc.
Everybody that was anybody in Third Reich Germany showed up at the House of German Art or across the street at the exhibition of the Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art). Anybody from Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler to Adolf Hitler himself could have used this Wellner piece on some occasion! A rarely seen Wellner piece in better than average condition.
