ORIGINAL THIRD REICH WHW OR
WINTERHILFSWERK MEMENTOS
In Nazi Germany the Winterhilfswerk (Winter Charity Campaign or WHW) collection campaigns took place each winter and raised a great deal of money for charitable purposes. It was common practice for those who collected the contributions to give donors a small memento to show appreciation for their contribution, and by wearing the memento it was obvious the donor had contributed money.
There were many campaigns connected with the WHW each year at the national level and at the Gau or “state” level. They were conducted for only a couple of days each month from October through March and the money collected was set aside to help those who were hungry or cold.
The Abzeichen or mementos given to contributors to these and other charity campaigns in Third Reich Germany varied widely from flowers to metal badges, but most were simple enough to be manufactured at home by unemployed hand crafters or by very small enterprises.

Some WHW mementos are superb pieces of art and others are very simple. Some include semiprecious stones and some are beautifully embroidered. All have been collected since the day they were made and are very much sought after today. Each lot is priced separately so be sure to order by lot number only.
| WHW Lot 9 (above) - consists of four original hand painted WHW plastic figures from February 1940: two Nazi policemen, a fireman and a member of the SS. The SS Mann in a black uniform measures 1-3/4 inches tall, the Police Officer on a white horse still has the orignal Third Reich string attached. Condition exactly as shown. |
| WHW Lot 1 (above) - consists of four original heavily illustrated WHW song books. All four still have their original Third Reich strings attached. The 2-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch, approximately 12 page books are from the rare WHW series Das Deutsche Lied (The German Song) and this lot contains Volkslieder (Folk Songs), Lieder de Bewegung (Songs of the [Nazi] Movement), Liebeslieder (Love Songs) and Kinderlieder (Children's Songs). All four original Third Reich WHW booklets are good condition, exactly as shown. |
| WHW Lot 5c (above) - consists of six 1-1/8 x 1-1/2 inch colored transparent glass medallions, each bearing a frosted likeness of a famous German above his name, from the 1941 WHW collection called KÖPFE BERÜHMTER DEUTSCHER MÄNNER. Each convex piece of glass had a relief of the subject impressed into the flat back side which was then either etched or sandblasted. The flat portion of the back was later lapped and polished giving a very life-like appearance to the subject when viewed against flesh or a light background color. Each medallion has a small hole drilled at the top to accommodate a string. This lot has Friedrich the Great, Bismarck, Holbein, Blüchner, Von Moltke and Prinz Eugen. Condition as shown, all with original Third Reich strings. |
| WHW Lot 14T consists of six rare WHW Porzellanfiguren, or painted porcelain figures. They are from the March 1939 series called Schaffendes Deutschland or Productive Germany. The blacksmith, 2nd from the right, is 2 inches tall. All six pieces still have their original Third Reich pin on the back. Condition exactly as shown. |
WHW Lot 28b (left) - consists of six original light metal WHW pins from 1940 in the shape of explosive devices. There is a Nazi hand grenade or stick grenade, a heavy mortar shell, a sea mine, a heavy aerial bomb and the 1-1/4 inch long artillery shell of the 88mm or 120 mm type is shown second from left. All pieces have the original Anstecknadeln or pins and are in very good condition, exactly as shown.

All 12 pieces still have the original Third Reich pin backs, some have the name of the traffic sign on the back. For example Haltverbot and Fernverkehr. | WHW Lot 8b (above) - these eight original WHW pieces are from the 1938 series Trachten der Ostmark. These colorful Webabzeichen have a heavy chipboard back to which a frame is attached which contains a Bevo-type woven image of men and women wearing folklore outfits from the Gaue of Niederdonau (2), Kärnten (2), Salzburg, Tirol (2), and Oberdonau. They measure about 2 inches in height and all eight still have the original pinback. Condition exactly as shown. |
