German Forests Treasures of a Nation, 1940
German Forests Treasures of a Nation, German Library of Information 1940
Reichsforstmeister Hermann Goering
German Forests Treasures of a Nation was published by the German Library of Information in New York City in 1940. During the Third Reich, the German Library of Information in New York published a lot of English language material about Nazi Germany, familiarizing the American public with the Third Reich, its leaders, its politics, culture, art, customs and history. On 11 December 1941, the United States Congress declared war on Germany just hours after Germany declared war on the United States in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Very quickly, the American Consulate and the German Library of Information in New York were closed for the duration of the war.
This 8-1/2 x 10-1/4 inch, 128 page hardcover book, German Forests Treasures of a Nation was written by Dr. Adalbert Ebner, Professor of Forestry at the University of Munich and Director of the World Forestry Institute in Munich. Dr. Ebner had lectured at German and American universities on logging and lumbering, and the author dedicated the book "To all friends of the forest and to my colleagues in the United States."
Reichsjägermeister Hermann Goering
Dr. Ebner's book covers subjects such as state owned forests, private and community forests in Germany, wood as a raw material, its by-products, the forestry industry, conservation and the accessibility forests as a result of modern freeways and national parks. The book has very interesting statistical data on the number of people employed in the wood industry in Bavaria as compared to in the rest of Nazi Germany, forested land percentages in each part of Nazi Germany, areas of forest per capita, distribution of land according to its uses, etc.
Dr. Ebner was known for crediting President Theodore Roosevelt as a pioneer of conservation and the creation of national parks in the United States. Meant for American students and forestry professionals, Dr. Ebner hoped that German Forests Treasures of a Nation would "contribute toward an understanding of Germany, as the German forest is part and parcel of the German soul." The book contains dozens and dozens of photos by author Dr. Ebner, and was printed in the USA.
This original 78 year old hardcover example of German Forests Treasures of a Nation is in excellent condition. Slight discoloration of the spine, but we doubt it was ever read.   No offensive odor.
