Reichsstathalter Wien
Generalmajor der Polizei Retzlaff

SS correspondence
This is the 1942 German income tax file for Generalmajor der Polizei and Inspector of the Vienna Order Police, Dr. Karl Retzlaff of Wien (Vienna), Germany (now Austria). It consists of the tax form work sheet, the completed tax return and 11 other letters and documents concerning the tax return from the file of the Reichsstatthalter in Wien, Baldur von Schirach, on Ballhausplatz in Vienna. There are documents from the higher SS and Police Führer signed by an as-yet unidentified SS-Gruppenführer, the Police President in Vienna, and others.

In this paperwork it is mentioned Dr. Karl Retzlaff was a married man, had a daughter named Ursula (born in December 1933) and lived in a rented residence in Wien, the second largest city in Hitler’s Greater Germany.

This rare Nazi document lot includes correspondence regarding costly medical and dental treatment from 1940. The extent to which this sort of paperwork became general knowledge within the Third Reich bureaucracy is evident in the picture below, of the Reichsstatthalter Wien receiving stamp and all the endorsements on it.

Dr. Karl Retzlaff was born on 7 May 1890, was Nazi Party member number 4 349 909 and SS member 337 70, recipient of both the SS Honor Ring and the SS Honor Sword.

On Adolf Hitler’s birthday in 1940 he was promoted to SS-Brigadeführer and Generalmajor der Polizei. From November 1939 until September 1943 he was Inspekteur (later Befehlshaber) der Ordnungspolizei in Wien and from September 1943 until January 1945 he was Befehlshaber der Ordnungspolizei in Hamburg. On 30 January 1944 he was promoted to SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Polizei. There does not appear to be any record of his death and some speculate that he was one of the high-level Nazis who found refuge in South America.
The tax return of any high-ranking Nazi for any year would be virtually impossible to find today, WITHOUT the supporting correspondence from other high-ranking Nazis and Nazi offices. This appears to be the complete Nazi Party Retzloff tax file for the year 1942.
