DER DEUTSCHE FLUGSPORT
FINE 1938 NAZI AVIATION SPORT PHOTO BOOK
Published by Junker und Dünnhaupt Verlag in Berlin, this 1938 Nazi aviation photo book with high-quality glossy pages has a flexible cover and comes with its original 83 year old dust jacket which is missing a small part of the upper left corner but is otherwise complete. The book itself is in very nice condition and has no offensive odor.
The last 29 pages of Der deutsche Flugsport has photos of motorized airplanes and sailplane pilots who have graduated to ‘real airplanes’ - the ultimate goal. There are photos of Heinkel, Focke-Wulf, Messerschmitt and Arado airplanes on the ground and in the air, pilots in training, flight instructors, the weather instructor at Tempelhof Airfield in Berlin, visitors on an airfield during the Deutschlandflug, the amazing Fieseler Storch (“it can even land and take-off with ease from a soccer field”), Heinkel He 42 seaplanes at Warnemünde, NSFK balloons and even a German airplane flying around a pyramid in Egypt!
Der deutsche Flugsport, Peter Supf
HJ Berlin
Der deutsche Flugsport is a fine one-of-a-kind 1938 Nazi photo book by German aviation historian Peter Supf with a preface by Generalleutnant Friedrich Christiansen, Korpsführer of the NSFK. The 8 x 10-¾ inch, 96-page book has 125 photographs, all of them officially released by the RLM, the Reichsluftfahrtministerium in Berlin.

The five pages of text in the front of Der deutsche Flugsport explain that “Flugsport is more than sport”. According to author Peter Supf (who was a Flieger-Beobachter or flying observer during World War I), it should be regarded as a lifestyle of citizens of the new Germany, where aviation plays an important role that teaches young people discipline that later contributes to progress of German society. Supf writes about early trailblazing fliers such as Otto Lilienthal and the Wright Brothers and how much their early experimental flights contributed to progress in aviation worldwide. Young German boys who start with sailplanes as sport, might be Luftwaffe pilots of the future!

Supf mentions that due to the unfairness of the Treaty of Versailles Germany was not allowed to have an Air Force after World War I, but that Adolf Hitler realized its importance and that is why on 17 April 1937 he announced the formation of the NS-Fliegerkorps (NSFK or National Socialist Flying Corps). The value of exposure of young German boys to aviation should not be overlooked, according to Supf, and that is why he produced this book .
The photos show young German boys, many in HJ uniforms, building and studying airplane models, testing small and big sailplanes, a Hitler Youth boy adding a gas motor to an airplane model (right), the inside of an NSKK model airplane factory (below), the steering mechanism of sailplanes, the Rhön Monument on the Wasserkuppe, Oskar Ursinus, HJ sailplane championships, the Fliegerburg der deutschen Jugend on the Wasserkuppe sailplane hill, a huge “Condor” sailplane flying over Berlin and the Reichsautobahn, several sailplane schools, even a rare photo of Generalleutnant Christiansen sitting in the grass talking to HJ-Flieger.
