The art in this rare Nazi book shows Liska had an eye for real war - courage, suffering, desperation and endurance under very difficult circumstances: the cathedral of the French city of Rouen in flames while motorized Wehrmacht troops drive by, fleeing French civilians, the damaged port of Ostende, the English coast under attack, FLAK guns at Minsk, Sturmpioniere, the Luftwaffe pilot of a Ju88, Fallschirmjaeger and Gebirgsjäger and their machine guns, battlefield destruction, Paris show girls at the ABC Revue, death at Dieppe, Wehrmacht radio operators on the East Front, the Wolchow battlefield, Soviet soldiers surrendering, a Nazi tank attack in the East, Panzergrenadiere, Tiger tanks, flamethrowers, and much, much more.

This is NOT a postwar book of Hans Liska art. It is an original, very rare 75 year old example of the Hans Liska sketchbook, complete with its original Third Reich ribbon and is in very nice lightly-used condition. No offensive odor.  The front flyleaf has a Christmas 1946 dedication that translates, "Lucky is the person that can forget every day worries through art."

This is a rare Third Reich book (NOT a modern reproduction!) of World War II sketches by Hans Liska published in 1944 by Verlag Dr. Buhrbanck & Co. of Berlin. The 8-1/4 x 12 inch hardcover book contains reproductions of superb combat and occupied war zone art done by hand between 1939 and 1944 by famous artist Hans Liska.

Many Third Reich collectors are familiar with Theo Matejko and his amazing war art. Like Matejko, Hans Liska was born in Vienna where he went to business school and later graduated from the University of Applied Arts. 

He was drafted in 1939 and became an illustrator for a Wehrmacht Propagandakompanie (War Correspondent Company). His illustrations made on both the West and East Fronts were published in many Nazi newspapers and magazines, among them the Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung and Signal magazine.

His work from the 1930s and 1940s was published in two  Skizzen-Bücher or sketch books. The 1942 Liska book was published by the famous Junkers airplane company and contained mostly airplane art, and a rare example of the 1944 book is the one offered for sale here on this USMBOOKS web page. A 3-page introduction by Walther Kiaulehm is followed by 62 pages of amazing Hans Liska art beautifully "offset" printed on heavy art paper.
