This is an excellent auto atlas in terms of its detail of the homeland of Adolf Hitler and the
Gaue that became part of
Grossdeutschland with the
Anschluss in April 1938. This is the 1939 edition of the very comprehensive
Auto-Atlas Ostmark at a scale of 1:200.000 or 1 centimeter = 2 kilometers.
The first page of the atlas contains photos of
Gau Niederdonau, der Ahnengau des Führers (Lower Danube, the Ancestral Gau of the Führer).
Interspersed among the 53 maps is advertising for hotels, restaurants, automobiles, etc. One of the first that caught our eye was an ad for a Gasthof Schwarzer Adler owned by a member of the
NSKK. On the opposite page is an ad for the Alpengasthof "Hubertushof" where they state plainly in their advertising that they don't even consider Jews [as guests]! See ad at the top of this web page. This hotel in Bad Mitterndorf is still in business today!

One of the notations on the overview map states that from 3 October 1938 everybody had to drive on the right-hand side of the road in Austria! P
rior to Hitler incorporating Austria into Nazi Germany, Austrians had driven on the right in the eastern part of the country, but on the left in the western part of the country. We have no idea how they accommodated the lane switch near Salzburg!
The map section shown at the bottom is a small part of the 10 x 10 inch page that shows the area around Linz. Linz was the home of the Hermann Göring Works (
Reichswerke "Hermann Göring") and Hitler lived there at one time before moving to Vienna. If you look at the area of
Linz, just the southwest you will see the town of Leonding where the Hitler family grave is located. Down the Danube river to the east of Linz is
Mauthausen, one of the most notorious of the SS concentration camps in
Grossdeutschland.
An extremely historical auto atlas from Nazi Germany in very good used condition with a bit of glove box wear on the front and back cover.
