Professor Richard Klein, KUNST
The foundation stone or ground stone laying ceremony for the new House of German Art on Prinzregentenstraße in Munich took place on 15 October 1933 and this Nazi “coin” or medallion was produced as a presentation commemorative to memorialize the date of the occasion of the Grundsteinlegung.

Adolf Hitler was present for the ceremony, as were other Nazi dignitaries and the architect of the project, Paul Ludwig Troost. Das Haus der deutschen Kunst, the replacement for the Glaspalast which had burned down in 1931, would open its doors to visitors when completed in 1937. It became the venue for many Große Deutschen Kunstausstellungen (Greater German Art Exhibitions) and survived the World War II. After the war it became an American Officer’s Club and in 1948 the US Army returned the property to the State of Bavaria. Today it is a museum of modern art.
Deschler Muenchen
House of German Art Munich foundation ceremony 1933
HITLER, Grundsteinlegung zum Haus der Deutschen Kunst in München 1933
One of the things that makes this medallion extremely rare is that the groundstone laying for the new House of German Art was one of the first official acts of Hitler and the Nazis in Munich after they assumed power, and thus it was attended by a very small crowd by Nazi standards, so few medallions were made and presented.

The front side of this heavy silver medallion has the famous classical Professor Richard Klein design featured in later years on the cover of the oversized Nazi art magazine Die Kunst im dritten Reich / Die Kunst im deutschen Reich along with the date 1933. Lettering on the reverse side says “Haus der deutschen Kunst” Grundsteinlegung and the date of the foundation stone laying event, 15 October 1933. A swastika and three shields are below the date.
The 40 mm round silver medallion was produced by the famous Munich order, medal and badge manufacturer Deschler. It has an artistic milled edge, weighs 22 grams and has wonderful, original patina. We have not cleaned it or polished it. Condition exactly as shown.
