Die Post was “the newspaper for everybody”, a weekly photo newspaper edited by Parteigenosse Dr. Wilhelm Kaffl and published in Munich by the Zentralverlag der NSDAP (the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party). Offered for sale on this USMBOOKS web page is their Sonderheft 5 (Special Edition 5), a set of two maps of the Mittelmeerraum, the area around the Mediterranean Sea, dated 1942, and perfect for the study of General Rommel and his Afrikakorps.

It consists of two detailed color maps encompassing French West Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Tripolitania and Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Darfur, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Sinai, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan with Tajikistan in the upper right corner of map 2. Southern Spain, southern Italy and southern Greece are along the top edge of map 1.

In several areas, including the upper left corner of the front cover, readers are urged to send this and other Lesestoff on to soldiers as it is “important to supply the front with as much reading material as possible”. Below important information about Frontversand there is also a notice that Die Post Special Editions 1, 2, 3 and 4 are out of stock and that they will not be reprinted.

Each map measures 23-½ x 35 inches (57 x 89 cm) and each has an index panel listing cities in alphabetical order. This Sonderheft 5 was published by the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party in Munich and printed by Waldheim-Eberle, a company that also produced many editions of Mein Kampf.

Both rare 80 year old World War II color Nazi maps are in very good condition. Carefully saved by somebody since 1942 (and by us since the 1990s!), this Karte vom Mittelmeerraum has no tears, no tape, no writing, no odor and is not faded.
