Soldbücher or "Pay Books" were the basic field identification document of all World War II German service men. They record promotions, equipment issues, service, medical and dental matters, leaves, etc., and were required to be carried by the soldier at all times in his tunic pocket.
Therefore, the Soldbücher of soldiers who saw little service are typically in very nice condition. Any soldier with a lot of time in service typically possessed a beat-up Soldbuch. This one has seen a great deal of hard service as is evident in our photos.
This absolutely authentic Soldbuch und Personalausweis that belonged to Obergefreiter Josef Ernst Platny, born in Wien in 1900 and inducted in December 1941.
He trained with Kraftfahrer Ersatzabteilung 45 and served throughout the war as a truck driver in transportation companies. He spent time in several military hospitals and was granted leave from the war front on many occassions.
Some loose pages but an interesting original Soldbuch with an excellent original Third Reich security photo of Josef Platny in uniform stapled inside the front cover.
