This fine immediate postwar piece of German ephemera belongs in the collection of a museum or
would make a historic addition to a collection of Third Reich Nazi Party Day memorabilia!
Added to this folio by the original owner, US Army Captain A.B. Hill, is an antique engraving (probably from 1870 or so, shown below) of the St. Sebaldus Church, which has a handwritten note on the back dated 3 December 1945 stating that he received it as a gift from one Max Schneider PhD. The antique print makes a fascinating companion piece to the 1945 picture of the same church in this folio by Ew. Friedrich (shown above).
The pictures each show some aspect of “the City of Reichs Party Days” in absolute ruins shortly after the German surrender in May 1945 (the city was 90% destroyed when World War II ended).

Friedrich drew the damaged medieval fortress, the Albrecht Dürer house, several different views of the old city center of Nürnberg in rubble, the Frauenkirche (St. Marys Church) on Adolf Hitler Square (renamed Hauptmarkt again), the famous Henkersteg (Hangman’s Path), the Academy of Music, as well as the St. Sebaldus Church.

St. Sebaldus Kirche Nuernberg
St. Sebaldus Church Nuremberg
Published in 1947 by W. A. Beckert Verlag of Weimar, this 74 year old folio is complete and in fine original condition. It still contains the publisher’s cover sheet that explains that before the “political sinners of the Third Reich” and the “useless war”, Nürnberg was considered the “Pearl in the Tiara of German Cities” and the “Treasure Chest of the German Reich” (Deutsches Reich Schatzkästlein). The heavy folio cover is embossed with gold lettering and a frame containing a smaller version of the print of Nuremberg’s iconic red sandstone Sinwell Tower.
This fine 8-½ x 12 inch (215 x 305 mm) German art folio contains 14 illustrations by German artist Ew. Friedrich of Weimar. Each 5-1/8 x 7-1/8 inch black & white illustration is tipped onto sturdy embossed 8-1/4x 11-7/8 inch cream-colored art paper with a caption of the subject in both German and English.
