Zarah Leander was Swedish by birth but became a superstar in Nazi Germany. In the introduction of Zarah Leander - So bin ich und so bleibe ich (Zarah Leander - This is how I am and how I will Remain) she explains the reason for writing her autobiography - to set the record straight about her controversial life and career. (So bin ich und so bleibe ich was part of the lyric of her well-known 1937 song YES SIR!)
Zarah Leander had come to Vienna and to Germany in the simple advancement of her career as a young female European entertainer, but became so popular in that culture that she stayed on to record many hit songs in German in her lovely accented husky baritone voice, and to star in many German movies. There wasn't a Wehrmacht or Waffen-SS Kaserne in Nazi Germany or abroad where the soldiers were not listening to the mysterious voice of the sensational Zarah Leander!

This 4-7/8 x 7-1/2 inch, 192 page hardcover book provides very interesting details about the many movies she starred in, her fellow actors, her husbands, her meeting with Dr. Joseph Goebbels in his office in the Propaganda Ministry in Berlin and the rebirth of career following World War II.
The book contains 40 photos from Zarah Leander's personal archive - childhood throughout her career, in the garden of her villa in Berlin-Dahlem and on her estate at Lönö in Sweden, with German UfA film studio general-director Ludwig Klitsch, in glamorous stage and movie costumes, during press events, with her husband, children and grandchildren, with fellow actors on stage and in movies, etc. There is even a photo of the front page of a December 1936 issue of the German Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung with Zarah Leander on the cover!

What makes this autobiography especially rare is a special dedication page tipped in inside the front cover to commemorate the 100th performance of Madame Scandaleuse at the Raimund-Theater in Vienna on 29 November 1958. This rare dedication page is hand-signed in ink by Zarah Leander.
The Raimund Theater was the place where her German career really began in 1936, and it still exists today. Zarah Leander ends her autobiography commemorating the fact that 22 years after she stood on the stage in Vienna performing Axel vor der Himmelstür in 1936 she was back in the same city, and judging from the special dedication page in this book, Madame Scandaleuse was a big hit!
This German language Zarah Leander autobiography was published by Vier Falken Verlag of Berchtesgaden in 1958. It is in very good condition and comes with its rare original dust jacket.
Also included with the rare autographed book is original 1936 sheet music for the song Gebundene Hände (Bound Hands) from Axel vor der Himmelstür (Axel in Front of Heaven's Gate), the operetta that started Zarah Leander's German career and made her famous in Vienna in 1936. The very rare piece is shown above and is in nice used condition.
