1936 Reichsarbeitsdienst shovel
Third Reich RAD spade
Arbeit Adelt (Labor Ennobles You)
ECKARDT’S IDEAL logo
This is the real thing, not some post-war phantom. It is an original 42 inch, 5 pound ECKARDT'S JDEAL steel spade with a wooden T-handle bearing a commemorative plate about one-third down the handle from the top. The 4-inch long by 2 inch wide embossed aluminum plate has the words Arbeit Adelt (Labor Ennobles You) above the RAD spade and wheat head emblem above the words Reichs Arbeits Dienst 1936 (Nazi State Labor Service 1936) inside a wreath of laurel leaves.
RAD shovel
3. Reich RAD Spatenmann
The embossed Nazi plate is held in place with four brass nails and has clearly been there for the past 75 years. The shovel was probably awarded to someone for some specific reason by the RAD in 1936.

The steel business-end of the Reichsarbeitsdienst shovel measures 7-1/2 x 18 inches and is well-marked on the portion that encloses the handle with the ECKARDT'S JDEAL logo. Stamped on the left front side of the blade of the shovel is the inscription Tehag above RL AG 1. Stamped on the right front side is the Eckardt logo above the word KRUPPSCHER ?OUDE?STAHL (Krupp Steel).

There is practically no wear to this original Third Reich spade at all. The bit is still sharp. It was apparently used ceremonially and then retired as there are no dings, just an even coat of surface rust patina.

Eckardt’s Idealspaten aus Kruppstahl
Reichsautobahn
RAD shovels during the Third Reich
An extremely rare and desirable relic of the Nazi Reichsarbeitsdienst, and probably the Reichsautobahn as well. Adolf Hitler used an identical Eckardt's Ideal shovel when he opened the construction of the Munich-Salzburg Autobahn as well as on the well-known Third Reich postcard commemorating the completion of the first 1000 kilometers of Reichsautobahn on 23 September 1936. This shovel could have been part of the commemoration of the completion of the first 1000 kilometers.
