HEAVILY ILLUSTRATED 1937-38 YEARBOOK OF THE NAZI LABOR SERVICE

The chapters are accompanied by maps and charts, and the larger fold-out map in the back show different RAD construction projects all over Germany through April 1937. The speeches of Reichsarbeitsführer Konstantin Hierl at the 1935 and 1936 Nazi Party Days in Nuremberg are there as are parts of speeches by Adolf Hitler.

Photos printed on glossy paper are interspersed throughout the text and show marching RAD men at the Reichsparteitag in Nürnberg, the new Haus der Reichsleitung in Berlin-Grunewald, Dutch, Italian, French and Bulgarian dignitaries visiting RAD facilities, RAD barracks, RAD flags, RAD men at work in a forest, haying, building canals, as well as young German girls doing various chores as part of their obligatory labor service.

This 7-5/8 x 8-1/2 inch linen spine hardcover example of Jahrbuch des Reichsarbeitsdienstes 1937-38 has 116 pages. The first two pages have stamps showing it was once part of the library of KLV-Lager Wm.9 at Hub bei Dagsburg (in Lorraine, now part of France).  Kinderlandverschickung (KLV) was a Nazi program (similar to those in Britain) that evacuated German children from big cities to the countryside for safety and health reasons.

Chapters cover subjects like the legal aspects of the RAD, National Socialist education while in the Labor Service, duties of the RAD Troop Leader Schools, female labor service and its leadership, foreign visitors to Nazi Labor Service projects, the RAD experiences of a Swiss national, the influence of Germany’s labor units abroad and updates about RAD construction projects in different Gaue of Nazi Germany such as Ostpreussen, Niederrhein and Baden.

This is the Zweiter Jahrgang or second year that a RAD Yearbook was published, and in the foreword the publisher explains that the reception of the Jahrbuch des Reichsarbeitsdienstes 1936 had been very good, and that this edition would further enlighten the German people about the mission of the RAD, and its importance to the greater good of Nazi Germany. An additional goal of this 1937-38 RAD Yearbook was to inform people about the weibliche Jugend, the female members and their service in the RAD.

Jahrbuch des Reichsarbeitsdienstes 1937-38 is a heavily illustrated Nazi book about the RAD or German National Labor Service published by Volk und Reich Verlag in Berlin in 1937. The material was assembled by Oberarbeitsführer Hermann Müller-Brandenburg (Leader of the RAD Department of Foreign Affairs and Publicity) and the chapters were written by Arbeitsführer from many different parts of Nazi Germany.

The 86 year old book is in very nice used condition. The linen spine shows wear, but the binding is tight and the pages are in very nice condition. No odor.

Since the covers of these RAD yearbooks look very similar some people assume the content is the same. It is not, so check your Jahrbuch des Reichsarbeitsdienstes inventory to see if you own this 1937-38 edition!
