The Nazi Concentration Camp at Mauthausen, Germany (now in Austria) was liberated in May of 1945 by the United States Army. Even today it is the one concentration camp that still retains many of its wartime buildings and its general wartime appearance.

Some time ago the government of Austria funded a special exhibition of the many photographic images that still remain of the concentration camp when it was being built and while it was being used by the SS to incarcerate people and require them to work in the camp’s infamous granite stone quarry on the Donau (Danube river).

In connection with the photographic exhibition the Austrian government also published the big 8-1/2 x 11 inch, 220 page, very, very heavily illustrated bilingual hardcover book ,,Das Sichtbare Unfassbare - Fotografien vom Konzentrationslager Mauthausen” or “The Incomprehensible Images - Photographs of Mauthausen Concentration Camp”. On the book the Austrians translate the German title as “The Visible Part” but that translation conveys almost nothing to an English speaker.

The book on the other hand is a gem. It contains official SS photographs of the Konzentrationslager under construction and being completed. The Concentration Camp is shown in use being visited by leaders of the SS such as Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler and his entourage, Ernst Kaltenbrunner, and others. Camp Commandant Franz Ziereis is shown as are the SS guards, Soviet, Spanish, Polish and other prisoners dead and alive, the exercise yard, the humiliation of Hans Bonarewitz before his execution, many suicides and many inmates shot while attempting to escape.

There are many photos of the liberation of the camp by elements of the US 11th Armored Division, prisoners tearing down the huge Nazi eagle and swastika over the main entrance and piles and piles of dead bodies awaiting their turn in the crematorium or the cemetery.

There are pictures of American troops digging mass graves, disinfecting the former camp inmates and providing medical services. There are lots of pictures of the female prisoners at KL Mauthausen. Naturally, there are photographs of the crematoria as well as Mauthausen sub-camps at Ebensee, Gusen, etc.

Of the many photo books about concentration camps produced since World War II, this is probably the best. It provides are rare photographic insight into the day-to-day workings of the camp, the staff and the prisoners. All captions and text are in BOTH English and German. New, unused condition - excellent.
