This is a Third Reich Wehrmacht map case that was part of a veteran lot we just purchased in Wyoming. The lot was accumulated by a single Ozark Division GI in Europe near the end of World War II and has not been touched since he brought it home in 1945. This Nazi map case has never been in the hands of a collector or messed with by a militaria dealer.
This is a typical World War II issued Nazi SS and Wehrmacht map case of the sort that hung from the belts of German platoon leaders and other essential military leaders.
Constructed of fine russet leather in a size of about 2 x 7-1/2 x 10 inches, there are two adjustable leather straps on the back so that it can be hung from a standard Nazi combat belt (see photo below).
The front compartments for pencils, maps, map scale, folding knife, etc. are covered by a large leather flap with a metal ended footman loop strap to hold it closed. There are two original German World War II issue map marking pencils in the pencil holder - one black and one green.
This is a very nice representative example. It is marked in pencil with the name of Lt. Klüppelberg, the name of the manufacturer A. FISCHER BERLIN C2 1939, a stamped identity number, and a stammp in a rectangle showing the unti that Lt. Klüppelberg belonged to - Stabskompanie Leicht Infanterie Regiment 8.
The only real defect in this map case is the absence of the footman loop in the metal oval attached to the front below the pencil holder. We have seen many of these broken off and we have seen lots of them that have been replaced by collectors. It is not a very difficult job for a handy person with a piece of wire about the same diameter as coathanger wire. Nice supple leather. Perfect for a mannequin or display of German World War II field gear.
