Nazi naval cap ribbons

The Third Reich cap tallies on this USMBOOKS web page are absolutely original, beautifully woven cap tallies or ribbons of the sort worn on the "Donald Duck" style caps of sailors in the Kriegsmarine and crew members of ocean liners, steamships and KdF cruise ships. The military tallies usually had only the name of a school or ship woven in gold thread on the black ribbon. Those for commercial sailors on ocean liners usually had the ship's name in the center and the flags of the company or the country on the sides.

They should NEVER be handled. Proper conservation is an inexpensive way to improve and protect the investment value of any rare item. We mail tallies carefully rolled on soft material and sealed in 3 mil plastic packaging to insure they will not be damaged in transit. Each of these tallies offered below is very rare but quite conservable.
A few words about the condition of these ORIGINAL German cap tallies or ribbons:
These tallies, like any similar 70+ year old embroidered silk, synthetic silk, lithographed paper, or other valuable antique item of ephemera, are subject to deterioration if not properly conserved for their incredible historical value. As with posters, conservation of tallies can include backing them with linen or archival paper of an appropriate color, framing them under glass, and keeping them out of direct sunlight. It is in the best interest of the museums and collectors that possess such things to conserve them carefully or to have the work done by professionals in the picture framing business.
KdF-Kreuzfahrtschiff ROBERT LEY
Third Reich Hapag St. Louis cap ribbon with swastika
On 25 August 1939, she was taken over by the Kriegsmarine and was turned into a hospital ship. In July 1941 it became the living quarters for the 1st U-Boot Training Division. From the end of July 1944 until the end of the war, it was used as a casualty transport ship in the Baltic Sea until it was hit in the port of Hamburg during a RAF air raid. It burned out completely and was scrapped in Britain in 1947.
The St. Louis, built by Bremer Vulkan as the sister ship of the Milwaukee. The 174.9 meter long and 22.10 meter wide, 3000 horsepower passenger ship served the transatlantic route for HAPAG. From 1934 onward the St. Louis was chartered by the KdF for their cruises to Norway.

The launch of the KdF cruise ship Robert Ley, named after the head of the DAF Reichsorganisationsleiter Dr. Robert Ley, took place on 29 March 1938 in the presence of Adolf Hitler. The cruise ship was owned by the DAF and was managed, crewed and maintained by the Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG).
KdF-Kreuzfahrtschiff Robert Ley
In May 1939, she sailed together with the Kraft durch Freude (KdF or Strength through Joy) ships Wilhelm Gustloff, Stuttgart, Der Deutsche and Sierra Cordoba and the ship Oceana to Spain, where the fleet arrived on 24 May and unloaded medical and other materials for the nationalist government. On 26 May, the troops of the Condor Legion came on board (1416 men on the Robert Ley), returning to Hamburg on 30 May.

NUMBER 1 OF FIVE TALLIES : ROBERT LEY

NUMBER 2 OF FIVE TALLIES: ST. LOUIS

HAPAG MS ST. LOUIS
The St. Louis gained world-wide attention in 1939 during its infamous journey to Cuba with Jews on board fleeing Nazi Germany (LOTS of information available online).

After its return to western Europe in June 1939 and the acceptance of the Jewish refugees in England, Holland, Belgium and France, the St. Louis returned to normal transatlantic trips to New York and entered the arctic port of Murmansk in September 1939.

After its return to Hamburg on 1 January 1940, the St. Louis was refurbished and became a Kriegsmarine troop ship. It was damaged during an allied air raid on Kiel on 30 August 1944 and partially burned. After the war it was rebuilt and became a HAPAG hotel in Hamburg-Altona from April 1947 - April 1950.

This original St. Louis cap ribbon has about 10 very tiny holes in the black ribbon which could not be seen if it was backed with a strip of black paper. Light fading, otherwise quite nice. An extreme rarity.

Nazi cap ribbon Milwaukee with swastika
The Milwaukee, built by Blohm & Voss as the sister ship of the St. Louis and sailed out of Hamburg between 1935 and 1945 for Hamburg-America Line. She served on the trans-Atlantic service until 1936 with accommodations for 270 in cabin class, 259 in tourist class and 438 in third class.
The MS Milwaukee was then rebuilt as a first class cruising liner with for 559 first class passengers and had facilities for spa-type medical treatment. She cruised to the Mediterranean and Scandinavia and in 1939, Eva Braun was a passenger during a cruise to Norway. In 1940 it was converted for war-time service.  The ship was destroyed by fire after World War II while in the hands of the British government.
Ths original Milwaukee cap tally has two very minor vertical cracks in the black ribbon which could not be seen if it was backed with a strip of black paper, otherwise bright and fine.

NUMBER 4 OF FIVE TALLIES: OCEANA

KdF MS Oceana
The Oceana, built by Bremer Vulkan for Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (Hapag), was used for KdF cruises from 1934 onward. The Oceana was part of the first Madeira cruise of the DAF in March 1935 (other ships included in that event were the Sierra Cordoba, Der Deutsche and the St. Louis). The Deutsche Arbeitsfront purchased the ship in 1938. In June 1939, the Oceana was part of the DAF fleet that transported the Legion Condor back from Spain to Germany.   During World War II it transported members of the Kriegsmarine as well as refugees.
In October 1945, the Oceana was confiscated by the British and on the way back to Hamburg hit by a mine. After repairs it was handed over the Soviets in 1946.

This original Third Reich white Oceana cap ribbon is somewhat darkened with a few spots, probably from cosmetics, otherwise bright and fine.

NUMBER 5 OF FIVE TALLIES: D. BERLIN

Norddeutsche Lloyd D. BERLIN swastika cap ribbon
NDL D. Berlin swastika cap tally
The Berlin, built by Bremer Vulkan, was launched on 25 March 1925, and commissioned on 17 September 1925. Until May 1939 it operated the Bremen - Southhampton - New York City route for Norddeutsche Lloyd. After it was refitted it became a Kraft durch Freude cruise ship and during World War II it was one of eight German ships commissioned as hospital ships (Lazarettschiffe).
NDL cap tally with swastika
By January 1945, Berlin was used for the transport of refugees and soldiers from the Eastern Baltic. On 31 January 1945, while forming up in convoy to head east, Berlin struck a mine off Swinemünde and put in tow for Kiel. She then hit another mine and was beached. All usable equipment was salvaged by 5 February 1945, and the ship was abandoned.
After World War II, it was salvaged by the Soviets and renamed Admiral Nakhimov. She entered passenger service for the Black Sea Steamship Company in 1957. In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the ship was used to transport soldiers to Cuba.
