This rare, original example of Hamburger Zeitung or Hamburg Newspaper is a “combined war edition of Hamburger Anzeiger, Hamburger Fremdenblatt and Hamburger Tageblatt” according to the masthead. It is only the second day this ‘consolidated’ Hamburg newspaper was printed!

The headline announces the “soldierly death” of Adolf Hitler at the Reichschancellery in Berlin on 1 May 1945, and says that even during his last few breaths he battled Bolshevism!

There is also an appeal from Karl Kaufmann, the Nazi Gauleiter and Reichsstatthalter of Hamburg, which was broadcast to “Party Members and the population of Hamburg” at 11 pm on 1 May 1945. After announcing the death of Hitler he urged everybody to place their destiny in his hands, and to be disciplined during the difficult days ahead.

There is also other war news of Russian troops invading the German homeland, and foreign responses to the death of Hitler.
