USM book #249b
|
This is a good used example of the very, very rare 6 x 8-1/4 inch, 248 page, heavily illustrated soft cover book Mutter, erzähl von Adolf Hitler! (Mother, Tell Us About Adolf Hitler) by Johanna Haarer as published by J.F. Lehmanns Verlag of Berlin / München in 1939. The book is wonderfully illustrated with 57 unique pen and ink illustrations by Rolf Winkler.
Johanna Haarer was a medical doctor who was known for the books she wrote for new mothers, but with this book she approached a much wider audience - children of all ages. The book is based on the premise of a child asking her mother to explain the phenomenon of Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in Germany. It is done in a superb, convincing fashion with all the appropriate pictures needed to show Hitler, his surroundings, his anti-Semitism, and his point of view in the most generously favorable light.
Naturally, the Allies were not fond of this book and at the end of World War II examples were sought out for destruction. The example we offer here survived only because it was a schoolbook in the Czech town of Pernek where no de-Nazification ever took place with relation to school books. The small Czech town of Pernek is located near the Czech-Austrian border, just north of Linz and Leonding where Hitler spent many years during his youth.
Mutter, erzähl von Adolf Hitler! is a very rare book and this example is in nice condition.
