Deutsche Guernsey Zeitung Nummer 1
Deutsche Guernsey Zeitung, DAK, El Alamein news
DEUTSCHE GUERNSEY ZEITUNG, NAZI SOLDIER NEWSPAPER 4 JULY 1942
1942 Nazi soldier newspaper Deutsche Guernsey Zeitung
Issue number 1 of Deutsche Guernsey Zeitung measures 12-¼ x 17 inches. Below the striking Nazi eagle and swastika masthead are articles about Churchill’s political career, food shortages in Switzerland, an eruption of Mt. Etna, German war news from North Africa and the Soviet Union, new recipients of the Knight’s Cross and the notable heroic battlefield deaths.
This is the very first issue of the Nazi soldier newspaper Deutsche Guernsey Zeitung published on Saturday 4 July 1942. The “Good Luck” introduction by the German Command of the Channel Islands under the masthead explains that newspapers, mail and Feldpost took quite a long time to reach the German occupied British Channel Islands, so the German Guernsey Newspaper would help to inform soldiers stationed there about war news, political news, local news and events for Wehrmacht Soldaten. Support and contributions were requested to make the newspaper a success.
Deutsche Guernsey Zeitung, Sonderführer Herbert Ladda
This 79 year old Nazi soldier newspaper is in remarkable condition considering it was meant to be passed around and read by soldiers instead of gathering dust in an office (according to the last sentence in the Glueck auf dem Weg! article on the front page). We know that the example we are selling was sent home to Germany where it was acquired by an American GI and taken home as a souvenir. Rare and 100% original, condition exactly as shown.
Nazi Knight's Cross
On page two there are combined German-Italian press releases about victories in Egypt and heavy English losses. There are announcements of several coastal beaches on Guernsey being opened up for swimming for civilians and German soldiers, religious services, soccer matches between soldiers and Kriegsmarine sailors, entertainment programs, and a few jokes.
The Deutsche Guernsey Zeitung was the only German language newspaper published on the German occupied British Channel Islands during World War II. On neighboring Jersey Island, the Evening Post was published with the front page in German, but the remaining pages in English. We are selling the first issue, and the final issue of the Deutsche Guernsey Zeitung was published the last week of April 1945.
